The World Data System (WDS), an affiliate member of the International Science Council, serves a membership of trusted data repositories and related organizations. Governed by a Scientific Committee, the WDS consists of an International Program Office (WDS-IPO) based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, and an International Technology Office (WDS-ITO) based in Victoria, BC, Canada. The WDS mission is to enhance the capabilities, impact, and sustainability of our member data repositories and data services. The ITO supports the contribution of WDS members to the global research data infrastructure and coordinates the development and integration of components of global research data infrastructure with other operational entities that are invested in research data management. The WDS-ITO is hosted by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), a world-leading organization supporting ocean discovery and technological innovation. ONC is also a member of the WDS.
Making high quality data available and discoverable is a vital goal of the World Data System. This position will engage with WDS members and other partners as the data management community works to make high quality data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR).
The successful candidate will be working on projects with international partners within the data community to progress best practices and standards. As part of these projects, the successful candidate will:
- Provide technical support, software improvements and documentation for the Polar Data Search
- Facilitate increased integration and usage of Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS), particularly within the WDS membership
- Evaluate, build and extend upon emerging assessment tools for FAIR data and Artificial Intelligence-ready data, leveraging commonly used standardized metadata schema and data format content
- Build queries and dashboards that leverage the PID (Persistent IDentifer) graph for use cases relevant to the WDS membership
- Develop web-based, interactive versions and platforms of conceptual models, specifically for the Global Open Research Commons International Model V1.0
- Maintain and update WDS-ITO website (Word Press), with content provided by team
Position renewal may occur subject to performance and funding.
Job Requirements: This position requires a bachelor’s degree in information science, Data Science, Library Science, Digital, Computer Science, or related fields plus minimum 3 years of work experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The candidate is expected to have a working knowledge of software development for the web, data services, APIs, and some experience with a virtual research environment or gateway platform. Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Work Location: Fully remote, with option to work in-office in Victoria. Must reside in Canada to receive benefits. Must have a Canadian work permit.
