A Final Pulse Check: Reflecting on my time with WDS-ITO

Although I joined the World Data System International Technology Office (WDS-ITO) only 10 months ago, so much has happened. As the first Health Data Research Associate to join the team, my time here has been an incredibly focused and fulfilling journey, deeply rooted in the evolving landscape of health data.

Coming to WDS-ITO with a background in health informatics and data science, I had an invaluable opportunity to dive deep into the complexities of the Canadian health data ecosystem. My primary responsibility was to conduct a comprehensive landscape analysis of Canadian health data that maps the varied approaches to health data governance and responsible data management throughout the complex landscape. This foundational work aimed to illuminate pathways for better data sharing, accessibility, and reusability.

Beyond this core analysis, a significant part of my role involved actively participating in collaborative initiatives that will shape the future of health research globally. I had the privilege of serving in a co-chair support role for the Research Data Alliance (RDA) Health Data Commons Global Open Research Commons (GORC) Profile Working Group. In this capacity, I helped facilitate discussions and contributed to efforts aimed at improving the FAIRness (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) of health data worldwide.

My journey also extended to the Canadian digital research infrastructure, where I actively participated in a Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) working group. During my time with the group, I helped lay the groundwork for expanding the discoverability of access-limited health data resources through Lunaris, Canada’s national research data discovery service. This foundational work is vital for enhancing the potential reach and utility of valuable health research assets for the broader multidisciplinary research community.

Working alongside such dedicated and visionary colleagues at WDS-ITO has been a tremendous privilege. I am especially proud of my contributions, particularly in understanding and advocating for robust health data governance and stewardship. Areas that are increasingly critical for accelerating health research while upholding privacy and ethical responsibilities.

I am immensely grateful for the experiences, the collaborations, and the lessons learned during my tenure. While I’m looking forward to my next chapter, I will always carry with me the value of collective effort and dedication to global data sharing.

I wish the entire WDS-ITO community and all partners continued success in your vital work to advance open, trusted, and sustainable research data systems globally.
