It simultaneously feels like the Research Data Alliance (RDA) 20th Plenary was yesterday and years ago. So much has happened in the WDS ITO since March 2023, and we are looking forward to being in Salzburg, Austria for the combined 2023 Science Data Conference (SciDataCon2023) and RDA 21st Plenary (RDA21) as part of International Data Week 2023 (IDW2023), which is co-organized by the International Science Council’s Committee on Data (CODATA), the World Data System (WDS), and RDA. We are excited to see familiar faces and meet new colleagues for the first time in person.
Looking forward to RDA21 and SciDataCon2023, the ITO will be arriving in Salzburg, Austria a little early to co-host the WDS Members Forum on October 22nd, 2023 with the WDS International Program Office (IPO). This members meeting is for all organizations who have any type of WDS membership, and provides an opportunity to connect with other WDS members, the ITO, the IPO, and the Science Committee. Have your voice heard on the what, where, when, and how we can support you and the WDS membership at large!
Looking back on RDA20, RDA plenaries are a fantastic opportunity for early career researchers to learn more about what’s happening in the world of research data and build their networks. We are very grateful to have been able to fund two extraordinary students from Canada to attend RDA20. One of our student award winners, Eshta Bhardwaj was recently featured in the October 2023 RDA newsletter and you can watch her interview on the RDA Youtube channel to pump yourself up for RDA21.
Once IDW2023 begins on Monday, October 23rd, 2023, you can find the ITO and IPO at sessions throughout the week. On Wednesday October 25th, the ITO Associate Director Reyna Jenkyns will be presenting an interactive segment as part of the CODATA-WDS Plenary from 15:45 to 17:15 UTC. This session will be jam packed with informative talks as well as the presentation of the WDS Data Stewardship Award.
You will also find ITO Research Associate CJ Woodford co-leading the Global Open Research Commons (GORC) combined session on Thursday October 26th at 7:00 UTC. This combined session will showcase and give space for discussion on the recent GORC Interest Group outputs and GORC Working Group outputs. The session will also open the floor for ideas, suggestions, and conversations about what should be prioritized as next steps for the GORC work. You can read a short overview of the work to date in our recent news article on the GORC project. Come out and say hi at these sessions and throughout IDW2023!
IDW2023 is a hybrid event, and registration for online and in-person closes on October 20th. Don’t hesitate to register and be a part of the Festival of Data!
